Six visitors to the country tested positive for COVID-19 since the opening of international travel borders, says Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong.

However, he said confirmation of the variant they had been infected with would be known once tests results return from Australia.

In a virus update issued on Monday, he said the fully vaccinated visitors tested positive during the mandatory three-day hotel stay and testing.

Dr Fong said he wanted to make clear the objectives of border measures as they related to socio-economic recovery.

“The objective is to reduce the risk of entry of COVID-19 through our borders while allowing for quarantine-free travel from travel partner countries. This includes reducing the risk of entry of variants of concern or at least delaying entry.”

Dr Fong said the default quarantine period for all travellers from non-travel partner countries was 14 days.

“In some countries where we have managed to secure oversight over the escalated pre-departure conditions, we have reduced the quarantine period to 10 days.”
