Widespread power disruptions have affected Viti Levu following damage to key transmission infrastructure caused by adverse weather linked to Tropical Cyclone Vaianu.
Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) confirmed that a fault on the main 132kV transmission line between Wailoa and Cunningham triggered a major outage across the island on Tuesday night.
While the 132kV line from Wailoa to Vuda has since been re-energised, repair works continue on affected 33kV circuits, with teams now inspecting distribution lines to restore supply to impacted areas.
EFL Chief Executive Officer Fatiaki Gibson said restoration efforts were progressing despite challenging conditions.
“We acknowledge that a significant number of our customers are impacted due to extensive damages to the EFL power network, and we want to assure the public that our teams are working systematically to carry out repairs,” Mr Gibson said.
He emphasised that safety remained the highest priority as multiple teams work simultaneously across the network.
The fault on the critical Wailoa–Cunningham transmission line was located late Tuesday, with repair crews deployed early Wednesday. Repairs are expected to be completed by Thursday.
In the meantime, power supply to the Central Division remains severely constrained, prompting EFL to implement temporary power rationing. Customers in affected areas may experience outages lasting two to three hours.
Mr Gibson also acknowledged the support of commercial and industrial customers using backup generators to ease pressure on the national grid.
EFL says it will provide further updates, including a tentative restoration timeline, as repair work continues.
