The $50million investment at Damodar City should not keep people away from Labasa Town which was developed by pioneers over many decades, says Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs Charan Jeath Singh.

Mr Singh said while this development had been welcomed by many, including the Government, it was equally important to generate business in the vicinity of the town.

“Damodar City has come up with $50m investment but it doesn’t mean that everyone should run that way,” he said.

“We must remember the pioneers of this town who spent more than $50m and brought Labasa Town to where it is today.

“This town has a lot of potential and we’d like to see it grow with the World Bank funding of $200m for Vanua Levu.”

He said new developments would necessitate the need for more parking lots in town.

“So it is very important that whatever investment that happens, they should provide a parking space area,” Mr Singh said.

“That is why I have asked the Labasa Town Council to develop the carrier stand, build a four or five-storey car park to cater for parking needs.

“We need to do this because more developments will happen.”
