Postpartum depression among women and teenage mothers remain a largely neglected issue in public health and social support systems.

This was among other issues raised at a dialogue gathering held yesterday in which stakeholders discussed lasting and practical solutions for such area.

Organised by local NGO, ASK4HELP, its founder and executive director Asinate Korocowiri said it was imperative to identify gaps in policy and services to collaboratively develop concrete and actionable strategies.

“These strategies are to provide better support and improved outcomes for mothers and their families,” she said.

“We especially seek data and statistics on postpartum depression in Fiji.

“Women and girls endure unique vulnerabilities during the profound transition to motherhood, often lacking adequate emotional, psychological and social support.”

Ms Korocowiri said postpartum depression intensified such challenges, yet many suffered in silence due to stigma, lack of awareness or limited access to care.

“Families also bear significant impacts, frequently without understanding the nature of postpartum challenges.”
