Police suspect foul play in the death of a 27-year-old taxidriver whose body was discovered at Waisali Hill, Savusavu, on Tuesday.
Divisional Police commander Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka said the cause of death would be determined by the postmortem examination result.
“We are waiting for it as this would determine our next action,” he said.
Officers were at the crime scene yesterday conducting further investigation.
“They are also taking statements of nearby homes.”
The taxidriver has been identified as Amitendra Kumar of Vunivau, Labasa. Kumar had lived in Savusavu for at least 10 years and just got married last year.
His wife, who is four months pregnant, was still distraught yesterday after receiving news of her husband’s death.
His death has prompted Fiji Taxi Association general secretary, Ashwin Lal to call on police to increase patrol on the roads.
“Our taxidrivers are no longer safe across the country,” he said. For their safety, Mr Lal is calling on their members to install cameras in their vehicles.
