FIJI Police are strengthening their tactical response unit as part of a broader push to modernise policing and confront high-risk crime.
Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua said the Fiji Police Force was reviewing and enhancing specialised capabilities needed to deal with increasingly complex law-enforcement situations.
“With regard to the tactical response unit, the Fiji Police Force continues to review and strengthen specialised policing capabilities necessary to respond to high-risk situations,” he said.
The move comes as authorities step up efforts to address organised crime and other serious threats to public safety.
Mr Naivalurua said specialised units are needed to safely manage dangerous operations that ordinary frontline officers may not be equipped to handle alone.
“Modern policing requires specialised units capable of safely managing complex incidents such as high-risk arrests, organised criminal activity, and situations that may pose serious threats to public safety.
The tactical response unit forms part of the Police Force’s broader modernisation program aimed at improving operational readiness and response capability across the country.
Mr Naivalurua said the initiative would strengthen the ability of frontline officers to handle dangerous situations while protecting communities.
“The development of specialised capabilities is part of the Fiji Police Force’s ongoing modernisation efforts and is designed to enhance the ability of frontline officers to respond effectively while ensuring public safety.”
He emphasised that specialised policing units would continue to operate within strict legal and professional frameworks.
“As with all policing functions, any specialised units operate within strict operational procedures, professional standards, and established oversight mechanisms.
Police say strengthening specialist capabilities is critical as law-enforcement agencies adapt to evolving criminal threats.
