Drivers have been once again cautioned by the Fiji Police Force to think about the overall safety of the public when getting behind the wheel.

This after a 25-year-old man of Lautoka was instantly killed after an accident at Teidamu Hill yesterday morning.

The accident sparked new concerns from director traffic Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana who confirmed that initial investigations from the accident found that the likely cause was speeding.

He said speeding did not allow drivers enough time to make decisions for their own safety and only increased the chances of serious injuries or death.

Pleading with road users, SSP Divuana said drivers must slow down and try to understand that speed limits were there for everyone’s safety and protection.

According to police, the Teidamu victim was a passenger in a car driven by a woman and they were headed towards Ba.

She allegedly lost control of the vehicle causing it to veer on to oncoming traffic.

“They were rushed to the Lautoka Hospital where he was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival,” a police statement read.

Meanwhile, SSP Divuana said drunk driving has also been on the rise.

He said a 41-year-old Nadi man died on July 31 from drunk driving.

The road death toll now stands at 57 compared to 21 for the same period last year.
