POLICE have confirmed an alleged drowning incident of an Auckland secondary school teacher who died while diving near a resort in Lautoka.

The resort manager lodged the initial report at the Lautoka Police Station, prompting investigators and crime scene officers to attend the scene.

Police said statements of 10 witnesses have been recorded so far, and a post-mortem examination will be carried out once all formalities are completed.

The victim’s family was expected to arrive in the country on Saturday to begin their arrangements.

The deceased has been identified as Kevin Hu, a respected mathematics teacher and head of calculus at Takapuna Grammar School in Auckland New Zealand.

New Zealand media reported that he was widely admired by students and colleagues for making mathematics engaging and accessible and had taught at the school for the past three years.

Before joining Takapuna Grammar, Mr Hu taught at Avondale College in New Zealand and spent several years teaching in Nanjing China. His passing has caused deep sorrow within his school community, which has arranged professional support for students and staff affected by the tragedy.
