Assistant Police Commissioner (Crime) Mesake Waqa says the police force works closely with the Online Safety Commission to address the online abuse of women and children on social media platforms.

Mr Waqa highlighted the issue at Pacific Cyber Week events in Nadi this week.

He said the role of the cybercrime unit in addressing online harm involved investigations and prevention.

“The Fiji Police Force is dedicated to their online child investigations team based at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Suva to investigate cybercrime offences, including online harm and the breaches of the Online Safety Act across Fiji,” Mr Waqa said.

“In addition to investigations, our cybercrime unit is committed to public awareness initiatives through community and policing programs.

“This is important for the Fiji Police Force as we take awareness to the grassroots people in the villages and settlements in the language they understand.

“Similarly, the team also participates in radio and TV talkback shows to educate the public on cyber safety and online harm.”
