The Fiji Police Force is mourning the death of a 46-year-old officer who succumbed to injuries sustained during a joint traffic operation with the Land Transport Authority in Labasa.

The accident occurred on Saturday night along the Labasa–Nasekula Road, where the officer and an LTA officer were conducting a traffic stop.

Police say a truck driven by a 45-year-old man crashed into two parked vehicles, causing them to hit the two men standing by the roadside.

The police officer was trapped beneath the truck and was rushed to Labasa Hospital in critical condition.

He died early this morning. The second victim remains admitted.

Investigations are continuing, and the truck driver is expected to be questioned soon.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has conveyed the organisation’s condolences to the officer’s family, saying the loss is a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by officers while on duty.

He also raised concerns over the rising number of road accidents and fatalities, urging drivers and all road users to take road safety seriously.
