The Fiji Police Force is working with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to determine further actions to be taken in relation to proceeds of crime and the legality of destroying drug exhibits.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci said the issue surrounding proceeds of crime might take a long process.
“We had a meeting with the Solicitor-General on Tuesday, so we were discussing confiscated assets that were obtained illegally,” he said.
As for drugs, he said these were a part of police exhibits and most importantly, a part of their evidence.
“So there are due process to be followed. The ODPP is currently working on that, seeking the court’s assistance, seeking the court to issue a court order for us to destroy the drugs.
“If they have to be destroyed, they have to be destroyed through court order so we can have a lawful destruction of drugs.” He added there were standard operating procedures they needed to follow once a court order was issued for the destruction of drugs.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua agreed that Fiji did not have the capability on how to dispose large amounts of drugs.
“We need the Australians to help us with that,” he said.
