DEPUTY Police Commissioner Isikeli Vuniwaqa has been directed to conduct an internal investigation into the Police Jazz Band’s alleged participation at a dance party at Korovou last weekend.
Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald called for the probe after receiving a report from this newspaper about minors allegedly present inside the club in Korovou where the band had played on Saturday night.
This newspaper understands that the band’s participation at any fundraising event had to be approved by the Police Commissioner.
It is believed this procedure was not followed.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed the probe.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered his deputy commissioner for operations to conduct an investigation with regards to the claims made.”
“The Commissioner of Police had directed an internal investigation be conducted with regards to the use of police resources, the findings of which will not be released as it is an internal matter. As for the issue of the minors this is the subject of another investigation.”
Meanwhile, a team from this newspaper was witness to an alleged incident of police brutality at the Totogo Police Station about three months ago.
The alleged incident occurred barely a week after the Police Commissioner had reminded his officers to refrain from acts of brutality against accused persons and suspects.
