The Fiji Police Force has launched an investigation into the suspected cause of a fire that destroyed around 90 hectares of pine forest on Ono Island, Kadavu, earlier this week.
The blaze began on Monday within the Naqara Pine Scheme, and was only brought under control two days later thanks to the swift efforts of Naqara villagers and local leaders.
Minister for Forestry Alitia Bainivalu confirmed that police have already “taken action in relation to the suspected cause of the fire,” though further details have yet to be released.
“I sincerely acknowledge the efforts of the local community in working tirelessly to prevent the spread of the fire, as well as the prompt intervention of local authorities, including the Fiji Police Force,” she said in a public statement.
The fire damaged pine stands that had been earmarked for harvest in the coming months.
The Fiji Pine Trust has provided preliminary damage estimates, and the Ministry of Forestry has mobilised an assessment team to map the affected areas and identify recoverable timber.
Minister Bainivalu reassured Kadavu residents of continued support.
“I will work closely with Fiji Pine Trust, the affected community, and relevant stakeholders to ensure appropriate recovery measures are taken and that lessons are learned to strengthen fire prevention strategies in the future,” she said.
She also reiterated her commitment to maintaining the sustainability of pine operations vital to community livelihoods and the national economy.
