PRIME Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged the police force to work together towards creating a safe environment for people.

He told those present at the opening ceremony of the refurbished $30million Lautoka Police Station yesterday, that policing was a joint effort between those in uniform and those in the leadership level within the force.

“I encourage you to work together to create that environment of safety and security among the people,” Mr Rabuka said.

“Your visible presence, your words of encouragement, your words of guidance and leadership, they all contribute to the safety and security of our country.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged officials and the Yanjian Group Fiji Pte Ltd construction project team for successfully completing the new station.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said they would decentralise some of their Suva units and relocate them to the West.

“As I stated earlier at the opening of the Nadi Police Station, the demand is there with the members of the public in terms of our performance,” he said.

“And these police stations demand more from us in terms of the service we render to members of the public.

“We have included in these police stations and police headquarters in the Western Division some of the units that we normally have in Suva.”

Mr Tudravu acknowledged the previous administration for its initiative of building the police station, and also commended the Coalition Government for overseeing its completion.
