A NUMBER of drug busts were made over the weekend with police arresting several people in possession methamphetamine.
The arrests were made in Nadi and Suva where three people were arrested between New Year’s Day and January 2.
“The first arrest was conducted on the morning of New Year’s Day along Grantham Rd, whereby a 30-year-old man residing in Nanuku Settlement was found with several zip lock bags containing white substances believed to be methamphetamine,” a police statement said.
“Also seized were smoking apparatuses, dried leaves believed to be marijuana and cash believed to be proceeds of crime.
“In the second case, a 25-year-old man was arrested with clear plastics containing white substances believed to be methamphetamine in Votualevu.
“In the third arrest also on the second of January, a 37-year-old man residing in Makoi was arrested with a zip lock plastic containing white substances believed to be methamphetamine.”
All suspects remain in custody as the seized substances have been sent for analysis.
Meanwhile, three individuals arrested at the Nadi Airport found in possession of more than $10,000 in cash have been questioned and released as investigations continue.
According to police, the case involving money believed to be proceeds of crime is being handled by the Criminal Investigations Department Anti-Money Laundering Unit.
“The three were questioned and released as investigations look into the large sums of money found in their possession and whether it has any links to criminal activities.”
Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime Mesake Waqa said investigation into drug-related offences will go further into the proceeds of crime and unexplained wealth.
This aligned Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu’s directive to attack Fiji’s drug trade by removing the profit made by a few at the expense of innocent members of the public.
