Police have confirmed that the wrecked yacht which washed ashore at Vunikodi Village, Udu Point, is registered in Papeete, French Polynesia.

According to records obtained from authorities in French Polynesia, the vessel reportedly sank on 26 May 2025 near Moorea Island.

Following the discovery, the Fiji Police Force, in collaboration with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service and the Republic of Fiji Navy, worked with regional law enforcement partners to establish the origin and history of the craft.

Information received indicates that the yacht’s owner made several attempts to relocate the vessel after the incident, including chartering an aircraft to assess its condition while it was overturned in open waters.

Initial assessments by police and maritime officials suggest the yacht had been drifting at sea for an extended period, with significant damage observed to its interior components.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the vessel’s journey and eventual arrival in Fiji waters are ongoing.
