Allegations of the involvement of Assistant Police Commissioner Operations Livai Driu in the illegal drug trade will be treated as an unverified claim, says Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu.
He confirmed, however, that Mr Driu will be subjected to an investigation process, similar to that faced by seven other officers who are also facing similar allegations.
Viber chats on social media purported to show messages allegedly sent by Mr Driu in a group chat for figures allegedly linked to the illicit drug trade.
Mr Tudravu said he stood by his decision announced earlier.
“I’ve stated what we are doing in relation to the investigation into the Viber messages being shared on social media, and this includes the latest,” he said.
“Other than that, I stand by my earlier comments, in that until we verify the source and authenticity of the messages, officers will continue to work, unless and until there is concrete evidence, then I will make my decision.”
He earlier said public opinion is not evidence, and while serious, the allegations remain unverified messages.
