AFTER a lapse of 10 years the Fiji Police Force hosted its inter-formation boxing competition at the Police Special Response Unit compound in Nasinu.
Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho laid down the challenge to the boxers for the three-day competition.
Qiliho said this was also the start of their buildup to the Sukuna Bowl competition to be held in November.
“Sukuna Bowl buildup starts and boxing is one of the sports that really gets us going to the main rugby match of the Sukuna Bowl,” he said. “It gives everybody that morale-booster when we win boxing.
“It’s not just another sport that is put there for the Sukuna Bowl even though the main focus is getting back the Sukuna Bowl rugby title to Nasova.
“That’s where our main effort is and all the other sports contribute to that and if you win those sports you are a morale-booster for our gallant warriors who will jump in to that rugby pitch against army.”
He also reminded the boxers to fight their best.
“We should always keep in mind that last year we thrashed the amry team in that main rugby game and we just poked the bear on the side, they will come with all that they can do to get it back.
“Also boxing did very well last year and you brought smiles to everyone’s faces so keep that in mind, don’t be complacent about the things that we did very well last year.”
Teams from the North, Western Division and the Police Special Response Unit will be taking part in 28 fights for three days.
“I wish you all the very best in the games. Keep striving for the best, don’t think only of the Sukuna Bowl, think about national representation and all that comes with boxing.”
