The appointment of Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga as Acting Attorney-General stands unless something comes up in the Commission of Inquiry report into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner FICAC.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made the call, saying Mr Turaga was the only qualified person in Cabinet to take up the post.

“Brought him back as he is the only qualified in Cabinet to take up the post and until and if there is anything that comes up in the report that would incriminate or necessitate further investigations then I’ll consider that question when that comes up,” Mr Rabuka said.

The Prime Minister announced the appointment in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The acting role will remain in place until a substantive Attorney-General is named.
