Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic and untimely death of Nadi-based medical doctor and social media personality, Dr Isireli Biumaitotoya.

He called for compassion, tolerance, and respect for diversity in Fijian society.

“I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of the late Dr Isireli Biumaitotoya, a well-known Nadi-based medical doctor and social media influence,” he said.

Dr Biumaitotoya, known online as Leighley Leli Darling, was found dead at his residence yesterday in what police have confirmed is being investigated as an alleged murder.

The Prime Minister urged Fijians to reject hatred and violence against those who are different, saying that acts of intolerance are contrary to the core values of all religions.

“It is unchristian to go into violent reactions against somebody who differs from you,” he said.

“I believe all the other religions share the same values. You don’t go and offend or look down on someone who differs from you, whether in sexual orientation, physical condition or whatever reason, for that matter. To do so would be very unkind.”

Mr Rabuka revealed that he had previously attended a Human Rights conference at Pacific Harbour with Dr Biumaitotoya and acknowledged the late doctor’s courage and contribution.

“A lot of people were uncomfortable with him, but he contributed a lot in that conference,” he said.

May his soul rest in peace and may his family find comfort in their cherished memories. Moce mada Dr Isireli,” the Prime Minister concluded.

Police investigations into the circumstances of Dr Biumaitotoya’s death are ongoing.
