Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has strongly denied claims that he ordered the closure of the HFC Bank Stadium.

This follows a public statement issued by the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU) yesterday, that said the Prime Minister had ordered the closure of the stadium.

.“I did not issue any directive for the closure of the grounds at the HFC Bank Stadium in Laucala Bay, nor do I have any intention of doing so,” said Mr Rabuka.

He clarified that as Prime Minister, he holds no legal authority to make such a directive, adding that the Fiji Sports Council, as the owner of the facility, is solely responsible for such decisions.

“Not only did I give no such order, but I also do not have the legal authority as Prime Minister to issue such a directive.”

Mr. Rabuka confirmed that his only involvement was to express concern about the deteriorating condition of the stadium pitch, particularly after the recent Fiji Water Flying Fijians test match against Scotland.

He also expressed hope that the FSSRU would correct the inaccuracy in their statement and avoid further public confusion.
