THE commencement of three major projects at the Lautoka port is aimed towards making Fiji a shipment and cargo hub, said Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
He made the comments last Saturday while commissioning three landmark projects for the Fiji Ports Terminal Ltd in Lautoka.
“These are very important, when you look at developing Fiji as a shipment and cargo hub on the region handling cargo and shipping coming in from Asia and from America for redistribution, it is a very important day,” Mr Rabuka said.
“For us in Fiji it’s very important because the volume of traffic coming in from both East and West will have to be broken down into island territory siders.”
The commissioned projects included maintenance dredging, covering an area of 63,624 square metres which will ensure that Lautoka port can maintain its depth and navigability.
The other projects include the construction of a container yard, and a pilot boat project named “Louvaju”.
The PM said these projects were also part of Government’s larger initiative under the “Transformational Strategic Thrusts” policy to enhance critical infrastructure which reflected the nation’s commitment to sustainable economic growth.
