FIJI will need to reconsider the enforcement of litter laws to discourage the use of plastic bottles and promote recycling in Fiji.

This was highlighted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during his visit to affected sites in the Nausori area yesterday.

Mr Rabuka visited sites that were severely affected by flash flooding and heavy downpour this week, including Waidamudamu Settlement, Dilkusha landslide site and Nausori Village.

He was briefed by Commissioner Central Josefa Navuku, who provided updates on the areas.

Mr Rabuka highlighted the importance of proper waste management and recycling to address the issue. He also raised concerns about the drainage system at the Rewa Bridge and the role of plastic waste in intensifying the flooding.

“Our rubbish heaps grow with the population, and we must maintain proper hygiene and proper disposal of rubbish,” Mr Rabuka said.

“We may have to ask those responsible to look at the reintroduction of litter laws and discourage the people from using plastic bottles and encourage recycling in Fiji.”

Mr Rabuka said the Government remained committed to collaborating with special administrators to uphold cleanliness in cities and towns nationwide.

He urged people to “stay safe” and for school committees to undertake clean-up activities and prepare schools for the upcoming week once the weather cleared.
