Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka has dismissed Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru with immediate effect, citing the seriousness of allegations relating to the misuse of public office.

In a statement, Mr Rabuka said the decision was made to allow the Fiji Police Force to carry out a full and independent investigation into allegations of abuse of office linked to the Fiji Sports Council.

“The integrity of public office and the proper management of public resources are fundamental principles that this Government expects all public office holders to uphold at all times,” the Prime Minister said.

“Those entrusted with positions of leadership must carry out their responsibilities with transparency, accountability, and in the best interests of the people of Fiji.”

Mr Rabuka said the dismissal was necessary to ensure due process and prevent any potential interference with the investigation.

“In light of the seriousness of the allegations raised, and to ensure that due process is respected and that the relevant authorities are able to carry out their work without interference, I have dismissed Honourable Jese Saukuru from his position as Minister for Youth and Sports, effective immediately,” he said.

The Prime Minister has assumed responsibility for the Youth and Sports portfolio, while Assistant Minister Hon. Aliki Bia will continue to assist with the ministry’s day-to-day operations to ensure programmes and services continue without disruption.

Mr Rabuka also directed the Board of the Fiji Sports Council to immediately suspend its Chief Executive Officer, Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure, to allow the investigation into allegations of misuse of funds to proceed without hindrance.

“This step has been taken in the interest of transparency and accountability, and to ensure that the investigative process proceeds independently and without undue influence,” Mr Rabuka said.

He stressed that the Government takes allegations concerning the misuse of public office or public resources very seriously and that the appropriate investigative and legal processes must be allowed to run their course.

“The Government will allow the investigation to take its full course, and decisions regarding future appointments or any further action will be made once the investigation process is completed,” he said.

Mr Rabuka reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and the rule of law, adding that public institutions must operate with the highest standards of integrity.
