A GOVERNMENT cannot succeed if it cannot communicate.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said this while opening the inaugural Fiji Government Communications Conference in Suva.

The conference, themed “Coordinate, Collaborate, Elevate,” brings together government communications officials for the first time in the country’s history.

Mr Rabuka stressed that effective communication is central to building public trust and encouraging civic participation.

“When citizens understand what their government is doing and why, they are more likely to engage, to trust, and to participate in our democracy,” he said. “But we live in a world where information
moves faster than ever before, and public trust is being tested. “Every day across the world, governments everywhere are trying to maintain trust and public confidence. “And every day, we are being tested by those who seek to undermine our democracy.”

Mr Rabuka said communication must be consistent and far-reaching, spanning all platforms and communities.

Addressing participants, he highlighted the critical role of communications officers within government.

“You are more than simply a media officer. You are the bridge between the government and the people of Fiji. “You carry enormous responsibility. Today, we are here to give you the tools, the community, and the recognition you deserve.”

He also pointed to the broader global context, noting that international developments continue to influence Fiji.

Mr Rabuka described the conference as a milestone, marking the first time government communicators in Fiji have come together in a professional forum of this kind.

“That fact alone shows how seriously this government takes communications. “It shows how determined we are to build a professional, coordinated, and capable communications function across every ministry.”

He added that the conference theme reflects the government’s broader objective of improving communication standards. “The theme captures exactly what we intend to do, raise the standard of government communications, together, as one.”
