YOUNG people across Fiji are urged to turn out in large numbers for the upcoming national election, with a strong call to take ownership of the country’s future.
National Youth Council of Fiji president Laisani Sepo said youth must recognise the power they hold and actively participate in shaping the nation’s leadership.
“As young people, this is for the betterment of our country,” she said.
Ms Sepo said the upcoming election presented an important opportunity for youths to influence change and ensure their voices were reflected at national level.
“We have seen a lot throughout our political history, and we must stand our ground and take ownership of our beloved Fiji.”
This is after data from the Fijian Elections Office shows that only 58.46 per cent of eligible voters aged 18 to 20 years voted in the 2022 election. To address this, she said, there was a need for increase civic awareness among youths, particularly those voting for the first time.
“Our young people need to understand that their vote matters. It is not just about choosing leaders, but about deciding the future direction of our country.”
She believes that if young people unite and participate actively, they can become a powerful force in shaping a better Fiji.
