Players impress at Chess event

THE young chess players from Fiji have been showcasing great determination and skill at the Oceania Youth Zonal Chess Championship 2025 in Brisbane, Australia.

Leading the charge in the under-14 Open division is Lionel Vaurasi, who secured an impressive win against a higher-rated player from New Zealand in Round 2.

He continued to impress with a draw against an Australian player and another victory in Round 6.

In the U14 Female division, Latileta Masau surprised many with a breakthrough win in Round 2 against a higher-rated Australian player.

She continued her strong performance with a victory over a player from Tonga in Round 6.

Praveer Singh in the U18 Open division also showed his skills with a hard-fought win against an Australian player in Round 4 and a draw with his teammate in Round 6.

In the U20 Female division, WCM Tanvi Prasad had a steady performance with draws in Rounds 3 and 5 but ended on a high note with a victory against a higher-rated Australian player in Round 6.

CM Rudr Prasad in the U20 Open division finished strong with a win in Round 6.

Hilda Kunau, President of the Fiji Chess Federation, expressed pride in the players’ commitment.

“We are extremely proud of the commitment, discipline, and resilience our young players have shown on the international stage,” said Kunau.

“Each game is building their confidence and experience, and these performances reflect the steady growth of chess in Fiji.”

Kristy Fong, Team Manager, highlighted the invaluable learning experience the players have gained.

“This championship has been an invaluable learning experience for our players,” said Fong.

“They have competed with courage and focus, and we’re encouraged by their progress as we head into the final rounds and continue gaining exposure to high-level classical competition.”

The competition will conclude today.
