There is too much individualism.

These were the words of former Fiji international rugby player Sireli Naqelevuki when asked about his thoughts on the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s men’s team performance in the HSBC Sevens Series.

In an interview with this newspaper, the former national representative said from his perspective, the Fiji 7s squad members were yet to establish that on-field relationship.

The Ben Gollings-coached side has been on a 15-tournament losing streak, something Fiji has never had in the history of world 7s rugby.

The team can put an end to this in Perth, Australia this month with Gollings hoping to start the Olympic year with a win.

Naqelevuki, who was the first Fijian player to play for South African franchise, Stormers in the Super 14 now called Super Rugby Pacific, also part of the Barbarians side said to get back to winning ways, the players must limit individualism on the field.

“From my view I think our national players are yet to find that juice that makes their performance click on the field.

I know they’ll find that spark that once put Fiji right up there in 7s, every other player that once wore that white jersey has felt that special bond and hopefully this current crop will find it soon.

“Right now, it looks like they’re far from that, doesn’t seem like they have that on-field relationship yet but I hope the coaching panel will help realise this and I wish them all the best this new season.”

The 43-year-old, who played as a prop in 7s but wing and centre in 15s, added wearing the Fiji 7s jumper is a calling that needed to be fulfilled.

“There is too much individuality, we don’t see a lot of teamwork on the field.

I know the coaches are aware of this and they should work towards this.

I think each player must prepare themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually when selected to represent the Fiji 7s team.

“That’s not where you learn the basics, it’s where you gel with the other players and work hard towards a common goal.”

The Perth 7s will be held from January 26-28.
