PLANS are afoot to declare Navua a town.
Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed this during an interview on Friday, saying the ministry is actively working closely with key agencies in the development of Navua.
He said they aimed to designate it as Fiji’s 14th town.
“This initiative focuses on establishing essential infrastructure and amenities, including the enhancement of roads, markets and bus stand to meet the criteria for township status,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“As the town grows, the demand for efficient emergency response services will increase, and this new fire station (in Navua) will ensure faster response times to fires, accidents and natural disasters.
“With improved better emergency services, Navua will be better positioned to attract investment, boost economic growth and ensure the wellbeing of its citizens as it transitions into a fully functioning township.”
Mr Nalumisa said work on this had started in 2016, but it was an initiative that was long overdue.
Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua also expressed his gratitude, saying he was happy that the Coalition Government had taken the issue on board.
“I was born here, this is my town,” he said.
Ratu Suliano said he had met members of the Indo-Fijian community in Navua recently to discuss plans for a new crematorium and mortuary. He also commended the opening of a new fire station in the town as a way for the town to grow.
“At least Navua is growing. For me, the Suva-Nausori corridor is full. People are moving from Lami to Pac Harbour, so we have to be prepared.
“In a few years, Lami to Pac Harbour will be like Suva-Nausori, so I am very happy.”
