The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) plans to construct a new drug rehabilitation centre in Naboro to address rising drug abuse among inmates.

FCS acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva said the initiative was part of broader efforts to strengthen prison services and provide targeted treatment for offenders struggling with addiction.

“We are in constant discussion with the authorities on the set up of the facility, hopefully with the assistance of our donor partners, we intend to construct a drug rehabilitation centre in Naboro,” he said.

He noted that current correctional facilities face challenges in managing drug-dependent inmates, who often enter prisons with violent or erratic behaviour.

Mr Moceisuva explained that inmates with addictions often attempt to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into facilities, presenting additional security risks.

“At the same time, those with addictions will do anything to smuggle drugs into the facility, which includes smuggling drugs, mobile phones, some through the body cavity, and some thrown in the walls of our facilities.”

He added that discussions are ongoing with authorities to improve security technology at prison gates, including the potential use of X-ray machines, although costs remain a challenge.

The Naboro facility is expected to provide specialised rehabilitation programs aimed at treating addiction, reducing recidivism, and supporting the reintegration of inmates into society.
