RETURN and Earn Fiji, a not-for-profit organisation, is coordinating a countrywide rollout of a community driven, industry-funded system for the collection of beverage containers specifically PET bottles and aluminum cans.

To begin by mid next year, the Return and Earn Fiji project will unify the collection efforts of eight companies into a coordinated system that makes it easier for members of the public to return PET bottles and aluminum cans then receive five cents for every beverage container of any brand.

Return and Earn Fiji spokesperson Dwain Qalovaki said the system aims to set up at least fifty buy-back collection sites across Fiji in partnership with communities, government and nongovernment organisations, then transfer the materials to its facilities located on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu for processing before shipment to verified recyclers abroad.

Mr Qalovaki said the system will accept beverage containers of any brand from members of the public in exchange for a financial value.

At regular intervals, Return and Earn Fiji will publicly release reports on the collection and recycling system to credibly demonstrate its contribution toward environmental stewardship.

The Return and Earn Fiji system is funded from the contributions of eight beverage companies including Carpenters (Fiji) Pte Ltd, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (Fiji) Ltd, Eddie Hin Beverages Pte Ltd, Frezco Beverages Pte Ltd, Motibhai and Company Ltd, Natural Waters of Viti Pte Ltd, Pacific Island Beverages Pte Ltd and Pleass Global Ltd and its membership is open for other companies that import and sell beverages in Fiji.
