The Bible is more than a collection of ancient stories. It is a living source of wisdom that speaks to the realities of Pacific life, connecting faith with culture, community and the natural world.”
Originally from American Samoa, Malakai Takitaki is undertaking postgraduate studies in Biblical Old Testament at Pasifika Communities University (PCU), driven by a desire to deepen his theological understanding and strengthen his pastoral ministry.
His studies have challenged him to look beyond familiar interpretations of Scripture and explore its historical, social and literary contexts. Through this process, he has developed a deeper appreciation of how biblical teachings can be understood through Pacific perspectives.
One of the most profound changes has been his understanding of God’s presence in everyday life.
Malakai said his theological thinking was initially confined within certain boundaries, but his experience at PCU had broadened his perspective, helping him recognise that faith was not merely an individual experience, but was also expressed through relationships, community and collective responsibility.
The lessons have also reshaped his understanding of pastoral ministry.
He believes that recognising what is right must be accompanied by action, particularly when confronting injustice and suffering.
Malakai highlighted PCU’s Whole of Life Education philosophy, which reinforces the interconnectedness of faith, culture, education, community and creation, and believes this approach is particularly relevant to Pacific societies, where land, identity and relationships remain central to collective wellbeing.
After graduating, the American Samoan intends to continue serving as a pastor, sharing the knowledge and spiritual wisdom he has gained with his church and community.
He hopes to encourage people to engage Scripture more critically and meaningfully, while urging Pacific churches to work together in addressing shared challenges.
Malakai hopes that reading the Old Testament through Pacific eyes will offer an opportunity to bring ancient teachings into conversation with contemporary realities, allowing faith and culture to enrich one another and guide communities towards more thoughtful and responsible living.
