PEOPLE cannot compare a young person’s knowledge and understanding to someone who has lived a fruitful long life.
Elders have seen how the world has evolved over the years and how good and bad those changes have impacted people’s lives.
Eighty-year-old Salote Caginitoba of Baba Settlement in Levuka has seen the Old Capital change over the years with the most notable change being people who live on the port town.
Ms Caginitoba is a descendant of a Vanuatu labourer who worked in the Old Capital in the early 18th century during the blackbirding era.
She said she loved the life she lived in the Old Capital, especially seeing Levuka Town remain as it was many years ago.
She said she was proud to be part of a town that has been recognised internationally as a heritage site.
“It was wonderful to hear about how early settlers and even the labourers have contributed to Levuka’s development until today,” Ms Caginitoba said.
“We live in Baba Settlement, a place where descendants of labourers have resided over the years. We often hear stories of how our people were brought in by European settlers and how they were later given pieces of land to live in.”
