IT was an improved performance by the Fiji One girls’ team in their second match as they secured a commendable 1-1 draw against the experienced Wanderers Emus from Australia in the Junior Hockey Tournament’s second day at the National Hockey Centre yesterday.
The team had faced a tough loss of 3-1 in their initial match against the Wanderers, but head coach Augustine Shaw praised the girls for their outstanding display in the second match.
He adds the players exhibited tremendous passion and teamwork, making the draw a significant achievement, especially against a seasoned Australian team.
“It was a great performance I can say from the girls, they showed great passion and teamwork in this match, even though we didn’t get the win, but the 1-1 draw is a great achievement for us, especially playing with an experienced Australian team,” said Shaw.
Shaw highlighted the valuable learning experiences gained from competing with international teams like the Wanderers Emus, not just in the sport but also in terms of cultural exchange and networking.
“We always love having the Aussies here, we learn from each other, not only about the sport, but also the culture and networking, so it is a great tournament so far.”
Given that most of the team’s players are new to hockey, witnessing their wholehearted dedication and focus during the game was truly inspiring.
Shaw expressed gratitude to the players and their families for their support and encouraged young enthusiasts to join the team and pursue their sporting passions.
The competition will conclude on Sunday.
