The Divisional Police Commander West Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa says heralding in the new year must be done in a responsible and safe manner.
The festive season operations for police began on December 15, 2025, and are scheduled to continue through to January 15 next year.
“We will cover the whole of the Western Division as we usually do each year,” SSP Vaisewa said.
“We have our officers in Rakiraki, Tavua, Ba, Lautoka. Our tempo of operations will be the same and that is to concentrate on our visibility, and targeting the liquor-related offences and we will be concentrating on our picnic spots for tomorrow, and the street party for tonight (last night).”
SSP Vaisewa is strongly urging members of the public to refrain from splashing water onto oncoming vehicles as this can cause accidents.
“We have mobilised our community policing officers to the turaga ni koro (village headmen) of villages situated near the highways, seeking their assistance in advising their youths, their children, in regard to throwing water onto the moving vehicles.”
SPP Vaisewa reminded the public that interfering with traffic is a violation of the law.
“It’s against the law too, if they want to celebrate, celebrate sensibly. Their safety must be paramount to them.”
