The Electoral Commission has confirmed that the number of seats in Fiji’s Parliament will remain at 55 for the next General Election.
In a statement, the Commission said the decision was approved at its meeting on 11 December 2025, in line with its responsibility under Section 54 of the 2013 Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.
Section 54(2) requires the Electoral Commission, at least one year before a general election, to review the composition of Parliament and adjust the number of Members of Parliament if necessary to ensure the ratio of MPs to the population remains as consistent as practicable with that of the first general election held under the Constitution.
Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Usaia Ratuvili said the Commission considered two official data sources during its review.
“In carrying out this constitutional review, the EC considered calculations based on two official sources, which are the census-based calculations and the National Register of Voters-based calculations,” Justice Ratuvili said.
He explained that the two sets of data pointed to different outcomes.
“After considering both official data sources, the EC noted that the census-based calculations would result in a reduction of seats, while the voter registration-based calculations would result in an increase in seats,” he said.
Justice Ratuvili said the Commission carefully weighed both outcomes before reaching its decision.
“Having carefully weighed these differing outcomes, the EC determined that maintaining the number of seats at 55 is appropriate and consistent with both the express provisions and the spirit of Section 54(2) of the Constitution,” he said.
He added that the Commission had resolved not to alter the composition of Parliament.
“In view of this, the EC has resolved that there will be no alteration to the number of seats in Parliament, which will remain at 55 seats for the next General Election,” Justice Ratuvili said.
