Parliament to elect President today

Parliament will today appoint the President of the Republic of Fiji.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has publicly stated incumbent Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere should be given another term in office.

According to the 2013 Constitution, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition can nominate one name each to the Speaker.

The Speaker then puts both the names to the floor of Parliament for voting by members of Parliament.

The person who receives the support of the majority of the MPs will be appointed to the position.

Ratu Katonivere is eligible for a second term.
