Eta Seruvatu of Nayawa Village in Sigatoka is urging parents to complete their shopping early to avoid the congestion of town centres and rising costs.

The mother of two was spotted finalising her purchases this week, opting to beat the rush that typically follows the distribution of the $200 Back-to-School assistance given by the Government.

Ms Seruvatu explained that her approach was tied to avoiding the heavy foot traffic at local retailers.

“We know when the government assistance is out, there are a lot of people, and the town is very busy, especially for these bookshops. So this is a good time for us to do our back to school shopping, rather than waiting for the government assistance,” she said.

While she usually completes her shopping before the school holidays even commence, she is currently tending to the final requirements for her children.

“Normally for me, I always do my back-to-school shopping before the holidays start. But right now we are just running around for the little things that were left for us to buy, before school starts.”

Ms Seruvatu highlighted that shopping early is not only a matter of convenience but also a safeguard against fluctuating prices.

“As parents we should, rather than waiting for the last minute shopping, because I believe that is when the prices start increasing.”

Living nearby to Sigatoka Town, she also expressed a desire to leave the town’s resources available for those travelling from further inland or maritime regions during the peak period.

“I prefer doing my shopping now, and giving a chance to those who come from afar, to do their shopping when school is about to start.”
