FIJIANS have been warned to be aware of scams such as Paragonix which uses the names and images of prominent individuals to promote fraudulent schemes.

In a statement, Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu said his name was used, along with prominent Fijians such as rugby stars Waisale Serevi and Jerry Tuwai, The Fiji Times editor Fred Wesley, and influencer Shania Singh.

He also stressed that he had no knowledge of Paragonix and was not associated with it.

“Despite efforts by the Consumer Council and police force, scam incidents are rising, often under reported, exacerbated by poverty, unemployment, and the complexities of global digitisation,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“Despite ongoing efforts by the Consumer Council and police force, the number of citizens falling victim to scams continues to rise. Unfortunately, the true extent of the problem is likely under reported.

“Advances in technology and increased interconnectedness create opportunities for scammers to exploit vulnerable individuals. Factors such as poverty, unemployment, and rising costs of living further exacerbate the situation.”

Mr Seruiratu said Fijians must be mindful of the risks involved and resist the temptation of quick profits.

“Consumer education is a crucial component of addressing the scam problem. However, a whole-of-society approach is essential.

“This involves collaboration between government agencies, law enforcement, regulators, NGOs, civil society organizations, religious bodies, the education system, and the community at large.”
