AS preparations gather pace for this year’s Paddle for Cancer, Fiji’s tourism and paddling communities are once again joining forces to bring this heartfelt event to life.
What began as a simple idea to unite people through sport and purpose has evolved into a unique inspiring fundraising event in the battle for cancer.
Representatives from Castaway Island Resort, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, Sixth Senses Fiji, and the Nadi Bay Canoe Club are working closely together ahead of the 36-kilometre ocean paddle from Castaway Island Resort to Aquarius on the Beach, Wailoaloa. Nadi Bay Canoe Club paddlers have been coaching resort staff teams on endurance techniques, changeover drills, and teamwork in preparation for the challenge.
This year’s event will be officiated by the Honourable Mr Viliame Gavoka, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, who will attend as chief guest — a reflection of how the event has grown in both reach and recognition.
Organisers have expressed deep gratitude to sponsors whose generous support makes the event possible.
South Sea Cruises will once again provide transportation to Castaway Island Resort for the paddlers, while Aquarius on the Beach will host the celebration ceremony at Wailoaloa. Safety and support boats from Castaway Island Resort, Musket Cove, and the Dulcenia will accompany paddlers throughout the channel crossing, ensuring all paddlers reach the finish line safely.
Funds raised will go towards the Christian Pesamino Leukaemia Foundation, established in memory of Christian Pesamino, a former paddler of Nadi Bay Canoe Club who tragically lost his battle with leukaemia at a young age.
What began as a casual conversation between Christian and his uncle about paddling to raise funds for cancer awareness became the inspiration for last year’s inaugural Paddle for Cancer.
Though Christian is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through this annual paddle, inspiring unity, courage, and hope for families across Fiji.
