Members of the national squad to the Pacific Games last year will make up the core of the side to the upcoming Oceania Athletics Championship in June, former Olympian and Athletics Fiji head coach Albert Miller says.

“We just want to keep those athletes from the Pacific Games as core members for the Oceania,” he said.

With the Athletics Fiji Easter Championships held over the weekend, Miller said he and other selectors will choose athletes from the championship to make the national squad for Oceania.

“So, from that core team we will select other athletes who competed in the championship.”

Miller said they have already pre-selected two athletes for his squad with the final team expected to be named early next month.

“We have already preselected two athletes for the team, but I will not be releasing their names for now.”

Athletes from different schools and clubs competed from the under-14 to the open grade at the Easter Championship.

“We have other coaches here at the stadium who will be on the lookout for athletes who we can add to our national team for Oceania.”

Miller also noted that Athletics Fiji is on the lookout for coaches to take up coaching for their national side.

“We are also looking for coaches at the moment as we have like three athletes per event, which is a very large number.

“So this will be a good opportunity for club coaches, secondary school coaches to come and put their experience and knowledge to good us.”
