Pacific Batteries Ltd has said “white powdery substance” found yesterday inside used car batteries that had been collected from various locations across Fiji.
Company General Manager Diwakar Dubey said the discovery was made around 12:30am on Thursday during a routine battery breaking operation.
“Upon the discovery, PBL management immediately escalated the matter and reported it to the Fiji Police Force. Authorities responded promptly, and an investigation is now underway,” he said.
“Pacific Batteries Ltd is fully cooperating with Police and will continue to provide full access and support to assist with the ongoing investigation.”
Mr Dubey said PBL is Fiji’s only automotive battery manufacturer, operating a lead recycling plant that processes used batteries collected nationwide.
“The process involves neutralizing battery acid, breaking down battery casings, and smelting recovered lead to manufacture new lead grids for battery production.”
“The company stresses that the plastic packages were found inside used batteries received from within Fiji and reiterates its strong commitment to safety, legal compliance, and transparency.”
