Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalusima has revealed that building approvals processed in 2024 amounted to a potential investment of $701.3 million, reflecting strong investor confidence in Fiji’s economy.
In a written response to a question filed this week, Mr Nalusima said the Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) received 835 building applications last year, with 759 processed and 635 approvals granted.
“These are not just numbers, they represent real impact on the ground,” he stated in the response.
“They translate into jobs, homes, services and economic growth.”
A breakdown of the figures shows in the Central Division 402 applications were received with 269 approvals worth $268.6 million
In the Western Division 231 applications were received with 195 approvals worth $319.6 million
From the Northern Division, 202 applications were received with 171 approvals worth $113.2 million
Mr Nalusima said 83 late applications were carried forward into 2025 for processing.
He also highlighted that municipal councils issued 338 building completion certificates last year, representing completed projects valued at $131 million.
“These completed developments are already benefiting communities, they’re creating employment, supporting industries like tourism and construction, and boosting local economies,” he said.
Mr Nalusima added that the figures showed growing interest in commercial, industrial, and tourism-related projects, which are vital to sustaining Fiji’s post-pandemic recovery and long-term development.
