An outing with friends to celebrate the last day of the 2021 academic year last Friday turned tragic for Mijieli Savu when he drowned in Nadi’s Nasau River.
The 14-year-old Mulomulo Primary School student is believed to have lost his life while swimming with his friends, who raised the alarm when they failed to find him.
The Year 7 student’s body was only found on Tuesday afternoon in the Nakurakura River by a group of fishermen.
“Our tears have not dried since the day he went missing,” said Mijieli’s sister Litia Savu.
She said the family had a lot of plans for Mijieli and his sudden loss was very hard to take.
“He aspired to be a rugby player,” Ms Savu said.
“Mijieli was a quiet boy who listened to everyone, never talked back to our parents and even the neighbourhood community had a very good bond with him.”
Ms Savu said that on Thursday night, all the siblings had a great time with him.
“He told my other sister to buy a pair of Adidas canvas shoes for him.
“Mijieli was looking forward to beginning his new school year next week. And on Thursday night we talked about a lot of things, little did we know those moments would be the last we’d spend together.
“My brother has left us at a very young age and we will now have to live with his memories.”
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident.
“At this stage, we confirm the incident. Investigations are underway,” she said.
