TRADITIONAL Parliament attire of wigs and gowns worn by the Speaker of Parliament and presiding officers will no longer be worn in the Fijian Parliament.
Speaker Dr Jiko Luveni made the announcement in the first sitting of Parliament yesterday, saying it would now only be worn on ceremonial occasions.
“As you have seen, I made a decision about the attire of the presiding officer and clerks of the Fijian Parliament. It is the tradition for officers of this house to wear formal dress similar to that formerly worn by the Speaker and House of Commons,” Dr Luveni said.
“It is my intention to discontinue the wearing of gowns other than on certain occasions.”
The House of Commons is the lower house of the Parliament of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
