Newly-appointed Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali has defended her appointment and labelled the criticism by senior politicians “irresponsible”.

She said she had resigned as chair of the Electoral Commission of Fiji before taking up her new post, and found it offensive that she was rendered to as a political appointee.

Ms Malimali, who is also known to be very outspoken, also fired a volley at one of her critics — Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu — asking why he was silent when convicted murderer Francis Kean was appointed a permanent secretary and Commissioner of the Corrections Service under the FijiFirst government.

Mr Seruiratu had questioned the processes under which Ms Malimali was selected.
