Fans finally got the news that they dreaded to hear.
Our 7s captain has signed with Houston Strikers in the US and will not be part of the 7s team come the 2017-18 World Rugby Sevens Series.
It must have taken some time before Osea made up his mind to say goodbye to his role as the leader of a team, which created shock waves after winning a historic back to back series title and Olympics gold medal.
Osea’s departure will be a blow to coach Gareth Baber, who is under pressure to emulate the success of Ben Ryan. I share the sentiments of Houston Striker’s coach that Osea is a player with a bucket load of individual ability and brings a wealth of experience of leading and performing at the highest levels.
I am grateful to Ben Ryan and Joe Veitayaki, who played instrumental roles in getting our legendary 7s captain a contract.
Ben’s relationship with Osea is special with the captain having made a comeback in 7s under the guidance of the Englishman.
Osea’s presence in the American club will add great value to the club and instil a culture of success.
As Fiji builds up to the Dubai 7s, it’s time that Baber identifies Osea’s replacement and starts nurturing him to fill the vacant boots left by the magical Kolinisau.
To Osea, we will miss you when the series starts but I am adamant you will return in one way or another to guide our 7s team to defend the lucrative title win in Rio.
A big vinaka vakalevu to you for giving your service to Fiji rugby!
Your departure is a blow ahead of the series but I am happy that you have secured a contract.
I wish you a successful and blessed endeavour. As I conclude, I express my gratitude to Peni Komaisavai for his article titled “Ravulo leaves his mark” in yesterday’s paper (page 43). I bet that those who knew “Macho” would have loved reading the piece.
The late Mr Ravulo would be missed by the rugby fraternity as he moulded a number of rugby players and teams and I am counting on the Victorians to win this year’s Deans trophy in his memory.
Rest in peace “Macho”! Peni rightfully quoted the words of Wadsworth that “When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men”.
