URUGUAY scrum-half AgustÃn Ormaechea is fulfilling a lifelong dream by playing in Rugby World Cup 2015, and also following in the footsteps of his father Diego, considered the greatest Uruguayan player of all time.
Diego Ormaechea, who is 56 on 19 September, won 73 caps and scored 16 tries playing for the national team during his 20-year career. He retired in 1999 after playing in that year’s World Cup as the tournament’s most senior player, aged 40, scoring a try in the team’s 27-15 defeat of Spain.
He then served as Uruguay’s team coach during their appearance at Rugby World Cup 2003. Ormaechea senior is a racehorse veterinary surgeon and currently the coach of Carrasco Polo Club in Montevideo, where his son made his debut.
Agustin, 24, plays for French club Stade Montois and England 2015 will be his first Rugby World Cup, having been a member of the national team since 2011, for which he has earned 14 caps.
Arriving in Wales on Sunday he acknowledged that playing at Rugby World Cup 2015 was the high point of his career so far.
“For us this is a big opportunity, I have always dreamed of playing at the Millennium Stadium,” he said.
Playing in Pool A, Uruguay face Wales on Sunday in Cardiff, Australia on September 27 Fiji on October 6 and England on October 10.
