Organisers decry ‘political interference’ in Hindu Unity gathering ban

The organisers of the 2025 Hindu Unity Gathering are blaming “political assumptions” as the reason for the revocation for a program that was to be held on Saturday in Suva.

Organiser Sandeep Singh said the decline of the permit was politically driven and discriminatory.

“This decision has been made on the basis of political assumptions, despite overwhelming support from the majority of Hindu groups,” he said.

“The reasoning provided does not align with the principles of freedom of assembly enshrined in our Constitution.”

Mr Singh said the organizing committee believes the move reflects deeper issues of inequality in how communities are treated when seeking to assemble.

He added 20 Hindu organisations have expressed full support and participation in the event.

“The reasoning provided—claiming division and lack of support from a few organisations—does not align with the principles of freedom of assembly enshrined in our Constitution.”

“We strongly believe this action is unjust and discriminatory. All communities, including the Hindu community, deserve equal rights to assemble and express unity without prejudice or political labelling.”
