Opposition MP questions PM’s position on election timing

The Opposition has accused Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of creating uncertainty over the timing of Fiji’s next general election, arguing that recent comments have sent mixed messages on a key democratic issue.

In a statement, Opposition MP Premila Kumar said the Acting Attorney-General had clearly confirmed that the Constitution requires the next general election to be held within the constitutional timeframe between August 2026 and February 2027.

However, it claims comments made by the Prime Minister have left open the possibility of delays, creating confusion among the public.

“Fijians deserve certainty, not confusion,” Ms Kumar said.

The Opposition argued that the Supreme Court ruling on constitutional amendment procedures did not provide any authority for the Government to postpone elections or extend the life of Parliament.

According to the statement, constitutional reviews, referendums, or legislative processes should not be used as grounds to delay a general election.

Ms Kumar has called on the Prime Minister to publicly and unequivocally confirm that elections will be held within the constitutional timeframe regardless of any recommendations made by the Constitution Review Commission.

It claims the Prime Minister’s position has fuelled concerns that the Coalition Government may be seeking ways to remain in office beyond its elected term.

“This Government was elected to govern for four years, not one day longer by one vote.”

The Opposition said leadership requires clarity and respect for constitutional processes, and urged the Prime Minister to end speculation about any potential election delay.

It further argued that constitutional reform and any referendum process should be left to the government that receives a fresh mandate from voters at the next election.

The Government has consistently maintained that it respects the Constitution and democratic processes, while discussions on constitutional reform continue.

The next general election is constitutionally due within the period between August 2026 and February 2027.
